Structural and Microstructural Design in Brittle Materials

چکیده

Structural design with brittle materials requires that the stress level in the component correspond to a material survival probabi 1 i ty that exceeds the minimum survival probability permitted in that application. This can be achieved by developing failure models that fully account for the probability of fracture from defects within the material (including considerations of fracture statistics. fracture mechanics and stress analysis) coupled with non-destructive techniques that determine the size of the large extreme of critical defects. Approaches for obtaining the requisite information are described in this paper. The results provide implications for the microstructural design of failure resistant brittle materials by reducing the size of deleterious defects and enhancing the fracture toughness.

Damage Accumulation in Unreinforced Masonry Due to Seismic Loading

Masonry has low cohesive strength and is susceptible to the brittle failure, when subjected to induced tensile stresses. It fails due to lateral tensile stresses even when masonry prisms are tested in uni-axial static compression and the stress-strain curve remains almost linear up to failure. Although masonry normally resists compressive forces, under lateral in-plane cyclic loads some parts o...

Stacking Fault Energy and Microstructural Insight into the Dynamic Deformation of High-Manganese TRIP and TWIP Steels

The dynamic behavior of three high manganese steels with very different stacking faultenergy (SFE) values (4-30 mJ/m2) were studied using high strain rate torsional tests. The hotrolledmicrostructure of the steel with the lowest SFE of 4 mJ/m2 consisted of a duplex mixture ofaustenite and ε-martensite, but those of the other two steels were fully austenitic. The deformedmicrostructures were stu...

Network Topology in Soft Gels: Hardening and Softening Materials.

The structural complexity of soft gels is at the origin of a versatile mechanical response that allows for large deformation, controlled elastic recovery, and toughness in the same material. A limit to exploiting the potential of such materials is the insufficient fundamental understanding of the microstructural origin of the bulk mechanical properties. Here we investigate the role of the netwo...

Exploiting Microstructural Instabilities in Solids and Structures: From Metamaterials to Structural Transitions

Instabilities in solids and structures are ubiquitous across all length and time scales, and engineering design principles have commonly aimed at preventing instability. However, over the past two decades, engineering mechanics has undergone a paradigm shift, away from avoiding instability and toward taking advantage thereof. At the core of all instabilities—both at the microstructural scale in...

Review of Damage Tolerant Analysis of Laminated Composites

With advanced composites increasing replacing traditional metallic materials, the material inhomogeneity and inherent anisotropy of such materials lead to not only new attributes for aerospace structures, but also introduce new technology to damage tolerant design and analysis. The deleterious effects of changes in material properties and initiation and growth of structural damage must be addre...
